How do I use my external hard drive for downloading iTunes and storing music?

Do I download iTunes to the external hard drive instead of to the regular drive on my laptop? Or can I download iTunes to the laptop and store the music on the external hard drive?

I’m getting the external hard drive shortly to hold my photos and all of my iPod music, ebooks, etc.

do everything just like you always would… download music, photos, or videos…. once downloaded find where they are located and remember the location on your computer. install the external hard drive disc if it came with one, then plug in the external hard drive. find and click on "my computer" you should see a new drive in the list of peripherals (i.e. drive c: , Floppy etc.) the new drive is your external hard drive and probably contains the brand name or model number in the drive name. now go back to your folder containing the files you downloaded and transfer them to the your new external hard drive. theirs a couple ways to do this. I usually have 2 windows pulled up, 1 is the external drive, the other is the folder containing my files to be transferred. then all you need to do is drag and drop. this works for me most of the time, however some external hard drives come with a disc that installs software to be used with the drive and without it, the drive might not function properly. in this case the software itself should give on screen instructions on how to transfer data to and from the external drive. if that doesn’t help then contact the manufacturer.
